Creative/Getty Missions have been discontinued indefinitely as of 10/15/18. The DroneBase team is focusing resources and efforts on Client Missions, our core business that by far provides the most value to both our Pilots and our Customers.
Why were Getty Missions Discontinued?
We were originally paying our Pilots a fixed amount for all Approved videos based on our estimation of a video’s lifetime value on our stock partners’ sites. Our goal was to pay our Pilots out on the front end (“seeding” payment) to get our network excited and activate them to provide us with a high volume of content from the start.
As it turned out, the “seeding” approach did not accurately represent the purchasing process. There was, of course, the chance that a video may be accepted by our stock partner and never sell. We took on the risk of paying our pilots before we got paid because we wanted to build our partners’ stock library and give our Pilots more opportunities to get paid flying their drones.
However, these stock videos have been slower to sell than anticipated. Also, the amount of manual work needed to review each and every video submission by our team was not an effective use of resources. Furthermore, the royalty payouts are frequently less than $1 each because many of our partners’ customers pay monthly subscriptions that give them access to footage for far less than the standard price.
Will Creative/Getty Missions ever come back?
Creative/Getty Missions have been discontinued indefinitely. Our team’s focus is on continuing to develop relationships with clients across all of the different industries we service while improving the Client Mission experience for Customers and Pilots alike.
I submitted clips weeks ago and just saw that they’ve all been rejected. Why?
At this time, we are rejecting any remaining pending clips.
Due to the disproportionately high amount of resources needed to conduct reviews and no guaranteed purchases, we have decided to reject all pending content.
Ownership of rejected clips still belongs to you. Ownership of clips accepted and paid out belongs to DroneBase and/or our partner(s).
Why were you paying out $15 per Mission before?
We came to the $15 amount based upon our original estimated value of a video over its lifetime on Getty. Our goal was to pay our Pilots on the front end based on the projected lifetime value of the purchases on Getty, rather than pennies on the dollar for royalty payouts spread out over months (or even years).
If Getty/Creative Missions have been discontinued, why is it still on the DroneBase site/dashboard/apps?
Our design and engineering teams are working to remove this from our site as quickly as possible, and it will be taken down very soon. As soon as we made the decision, we wanted to let our Pilots know, even if it wasn’t done simultaneously with the necessary updates for our site/dashboard/apps.
